CHAIN OF COMMAND - AL MAGHRIB CLASS
These past two weekends Al Maghrib Institute held its Chain of Command class, which is a class that focuses on Hadeeth Sciences. Many don't realize the importance of studying such a topic. However, it is incredibly important as it allows us to better understand our religion and be able to follow it as it is meant to be followed. Islam is a way of life, Allah swt brought us a messenger (peace be upon him) to pass the message of Islam so that we can live according to it. In order for us to follow the message we must follow the rasool (saw). However, we often hear people these days completely disregarding the words of the rasool (saw) because they either do not understand the importance of following the rasool and feel the Quran is the only way to follow Islam, or they do not believe or understand the authenticity of the words of the rasool (saw) as they feel many years of passed by and the possibility of his words being preserved is unlikely.
Before we begin I would just like to define the following terms:
Sunnah is defined as the sayings, actions, approvals of the rasool (saw) along with descriptions of his physical attributes, his manners, and conduct.
Hadeeth is the means in which we get and understand the sunnah.
Argument 1: The Quran is the only thing that needs to be followed
Allah swt says in the Quran Surah 5 Verse 92 "Obey Allah, and obey the Messenger, and beware (of evil). If ye do turn back, know ye that it is Our Messengers' duty to proclaim (the message) in the clearest manner"
Allah swt also says in the Quran in Surah 4 Verse 59 "O ye who believe! Obey Allah, and obey the Messenger, and those charged with authority among you. If ye differ in anything among yourselves, refer it to Allah and His Messenger, if ye do believe in Allah and the Last Day. That is best, and most suitable for final determination."
So Allah swt has given the rasool (saw) great authority and status in Islam, and has demanded us to follow the Sunnah. In relation to the Quran the Sunnah either confirms what is in the Quran, explains what is in the Quran or brings new legislation and new Shari'ah that is not in the Quran.
At-Tirmidhi (rahimahAllah ) related in his book that the rasool (saw) said "There will be a man to whom my hadeeth will reach him, while he is sitting comfortably, and he will say, 'Between me and you is the book of Allah, whatever we find in it that is Halal we will make it Halal, and whatever we find in it Haram we will make it Haram, and whatever the Messenger of Allah has made Haram is as if Allah has made it Haram."
In another hadith related by Al Bukhari (rahim Allah) the rasool (Saw) said "All of my ummah will enter heaven except those who refuse (or reject)." So they asked him, "O messenger of Allah, who is the one who refuses?" The prophet (saw) said, "Whoever obeys me will enter heaven and whoever disobeys me he has refused."
If one completely rejects the sunnah, then he or she is considered a disbeliever, because then the individual is rejecting the rasool (saw). Allah says in the Quran in Surah 3 verse 32 "Say, 'Obey Allah and His Messenger.' But if they turn back, then verily, Allah loves not those who reject Faith."
Argument 2: The Sunnah could not have been preserved for so many years.
This is a very common argument. People completely disregard the sunnah because they feel that there was way too much interference with the sunnah and therefore it has been lost. However, it has not been. By the will of Allah, Muslims were able to preserve hadeeths in such an incredible manner that it is now considered a science.
Hadeeth Sciences is incredibly intricate. There are two main parts that assess the authenticity of a hadeeth, the Isnad or the chain of narrators and the Matn or the text. Collectors of hadeeth or muhadiths were so keen on ascertaining the truth about what they heard that they would ride from far and wide to determine whether a hadeeth was accurate or not. Furthermore, all of the narrators of the ahadeeth were scrutinized. For example, everything was looked into from their personalities to their history, their manners, their social life, etc. was looked into before accepting a narration. Individuals were classified into many categories. For example those who became old, their narrations were not always accepted due to reduction in memory, or those who wrote notes were disregarded completely if one day some of their notes were blown by the wind for example.
Hadeeth are classified in several manners. This includes by their isnad according to the beginning of the chain from the rasool (saw), according to the number of narrators involved at each stage of the chain so from the rasool (saw) to the companions, to the students of the companions (tabieen), to the students of the students of the companions (tabi-tabieen) etc. Then there's classification according to the reliability and memory of the narrators, the link in the chains (so whether there was ever an interruption in narrators like if they never met, or didn't live in the same area so they couldn't have met). Then there's the nature of the text itself (so if it was abrogated later for example) and then according to hidden defects in the chain or the text.
Then these hadeeths are further classified and categorized. There is an incredible amount of work put into preserving the Sunnah of the rasool (saw) and it is all readily available for us to learn about and understand. However, one individual who put in all this effort to put the ummah to ease was Imam Bukhari (rahim Allah) who made it so easy for us to follow the sunnah and not worry too much about classifying hadith. Therefore, we have no excuse but to follow the sunnah.
We have to understand that Islam is the truth, it is complete, it is faultless, and it is our way of life that makes living easier. We are incredibly blessed and should be incredibly grateful to Allah swt for sending the rasool (saw) to teach us all the things we need to know to live the best life in this world and in the hereafter. Denying it will only be more difficult for us.
